About
the Artist
Thaddeus Erdahl
"Basic human traits and emotions
such as humor lie at the core of my figurative ceramic
sculptures. I manipulate these inherent qualities
in a theatrical manner to visually create a story
that lies somewhere between fantasy and reality. The
work created is intended to be stimulating, inviting,
and open to interpretation by the viewer.
Everyday experiences, observations
of the relationships between my personal concerns,
worldly issues, and popular culture provide much of
the subject matter and commentary for my art. Children’s
literature, well-known fairy tales, and fables also
play a vital role in the development of my work.
I choose to use ceramics as my medium
for expression not only because of the tactile qualities
that it posses and its ability to retain information,
but also through the process of translating the human
form in ceramics there is undeniably a story being
told. The story in ceramics is built upon previous
knowledge and is constantly in flux without always
being able to pinpoint one possible avenue."
