"I do the colors in different
ways. Most frequently I use plates that are the same
size, applying a color ink to each plate and then
printing in register. The colors combine when one
color is printed over another. Generally, one of my
color etchings involves using three or four plates.
Another way that I do color is chine
colle. With chine colle, I cut out dyed Japanese paper
to the sizes and shapes that I want. I apply a glue
that is used in book conservation to the sheets (it
is called methyl cellulose paste), position them on
my inked plate on the press bed, and when I pull a
plate through the press, the printing ink is transferred
to the dyed paper and to the main, underlying sheet
of printing paper.
The last way I do color etchings
is to use stencils that I cut out and then roll ink
onto the plate's surface."
