About
the Artist
Debra Lee
"I am an explorer. Painting
is my personal exploration of the subject, as well
as the materials I use to create a work. It is a fluid
progress that begins with an image, emotion or subject;
but the composition unfolds and blossoms as the task
progresses. The images guide me to create and shape
them as they take on a life of their own. I become,
not the creator, but a partner in the creation.
I am an architect and a mathematician,
problem solving and piecing the image together from
single brush strokes into a whole. I work with layers
of thick and thin color, adding marks with pencil
or charcoal. Surfaces are wiped, dripped and splattered
according, not to my whims, but to the design that
I discover along the way.
I am a lover. My art is a personal
relationship of give and take. Each layer or mark
determines and guides the next. The act of creating
is a personal solace. Watching an image materialize
from white canvas fulfils some need within me that
knows no other gratification.
I am a prisoner, a slave to my passion.
I am an Artist."
