About
the Artist
Bathsheba Veghte
"My work explores the unconcious
emergence and evolution of images. I have never intentionally
set out to paint, print or draw a particular subject
and have never worked from models or other references.
Rather, I let an image develop on its own and work
into it enabling it to become more accessible to the
eye. I repeatedly layer and remove my medium, following
a small brush stroke or gesture of paint than extrapolate
from it. I am placing my trust in something intuitive
and unknown believing that the resulint forms and
colors have a strength and merit of their own.
However, I do not believe in accidents.
I start with an unintended goal and my method allows
direct access to the unconscious. Here I am offering
a glimpse of something "other" , an image
that is not emphatically stated but nuanced and suggestive
and draws on in. What we can't see is just as important
and viable as what we can and I try to stay open to
those images, feelings and responses that are unfamiliar,
sometimes uncomfortable, but always fascinating."
